The Legend of Computer Zorro

Zorro (Spanish for Fox) is the secret identity of Dave Woolsey, a gringo and master computer swordsman living in the Baja Norte, Southern California region. He defends the people of the land against spyware, malware, trojans and other villains, and is not only much too cunning and fox-like for the bumbling bad guys & hackers, but delights in publicly humiliating those same foes by righting their wrongs, while riding on his trusty horse Exterra.

Your Questions About Computer Repair Software Reviews

John asks…

Computer won't start, "Windows cannot repair automatically."?

I accidentally installed two conflicting software programs regarding my graphics card. One for 32 bit windows and another for 64 bit windows. I use an ASUS motherboard so the start up would be in that. My question is, how do I get into Add/remove programs if I can't get windows to boot past the Windows loading screen? It does allow me to restore to a previous point, check for errors, scan memory conflicts etc. But the problem being is that windows cannot fix the problem on its own, there are no memory conflicts or bad memory, and the computer cannot restore itself to a far enough back system date to take off the really stupid mistake that I had done.

I know absolutely nothing about command prompt commands, but I do have access to that as well. It is definitely a software issue, and I know specifically which is wrong, but no way to get to it to remove it.

There is a 340 page report on my computer for my company review for 43 employees that I absolutely need access to. Even though this would be little compensation, I'm willing to send a valid USPS money order of $20.00 to whoever fixes the problem, as well as give them the 5 star feedback and best answer. I've had no luck on my own using google, mainly because I have no idea what I'm looking for.

Any help is appreciated.
I do not know how to boot my computer into safe mode, it does not manually give me the option to. How do I go about that from the start-up screen (when the motherboard picture shows).

Secondly, I do not know how to make a hard drive a slave drive. And another comment about that, Making a harddrive a slave drive temporarily on another PC to remove the documents needed wouldn't be a big deal, but it wouldn't fix the drive.

LASTLY: If all else fails, how do I do a system wipe, where only just the default programs are installed (example: Just the OS installed). I do not mind doing a full system wipe as long as the OS doesn't have to be reinstalled.

And Lastly in regards to my first messege: reminder; I have no access to anything except command prompt and the motherboard options (example: f1-f12 etc).

dave answers:

To get into safe mode, turn off your computer and turn it on again. When it is restarting continue pressing the f8 key up and down until you get a series of options one of which will be safe mode. Move the arrow to safe mode and select it.

Once there remove the incorrect driver and replace it with the correct one.

You can get access to your files using UBCDWIN which you can get at www.ubcdwin.com. It also has wipe utilities.

dave answers:

Yes your format to be plain sucks.
Start with personal info like you did
Go to jobs, bullet point highlights and experience in 1 line thoughts
Education at bottom skip the area of study you have a BSBA period they know what is involved in getting one (I have one also)
Then include skills especially if certified and be specific MS Office takes care of at least a few that you listed. Basically skip the whole skills thing you have listed there that shows in your experience
get rid of the long list of experience most people reading have not made it past the first part of the list to read on.
Make sure you have a good cover letter

dave answers:

Honestly, you have a lot of wonderful skills and abilities here. It is the actual layout of your resume that needs a touch of work. I would go to your local job bank or if you have a few extra dollars it is worth it to pay someone who does resumes to fine tune it for you. The job banks have tons of valuable resources and are more than happy to help you form the perfect resume that suits you. You need something that is compelling and will catch their attention. You have all the experience.

Go for it! I feel you have everything you need to make a great employee.

Best wishes!

Work in Canada (for canadians or anyone with firstthand knowledge)?

Which province in Canada is the best place to find work.I am a Network Maintenance Technician (Telecommunications) and also pretty good with computer repair and maintenance.I have heard that Toronto is probably not he best place to look right now as more work seems to be available in places like Alberta,New Brunswick and British Colombia.I would really appreciate any information I can get.
Thanks in Advance.

dave answers:

Alberta is the place to be. There are jobs and they pay good money. However we also have higher house prices and rent prices. I live in Fort McMurray we have the highest annual income in Canada but one of, if not the highest prices of houses. So look into it, so I'd recommend that you find a job and a place to stay before moving. This is especially true with Fort McMurray. Hope this helps.

Paul asks…

learning skills help?

Hi
i wish to train as a computer technician and got details through the post from LSOC (learning and skills open college)
Has anyone used this company as i wish to know if the courses they put you through are a recognised qualification or not.
they say their courses are A and a recognised qualification within the pc industry.
Could somebody please tell me if they have done a course with the follwing company and tell me if it worth the paper it is written on as it is an expensive course and i do not want to waste my money.
The site is www.lsoc.org.uk and the course is computer maintenance and repair and IT technician.
Many thanks

dave answers:

To be perfectly honest I wouldn't bother. Sounds alot like the whole computeach and cerco ICT training. I would go to one of their open day things that they are no doubt wanting you to go on but don't sign up for anything there and then. Your best bet would be to go there and ask the difficult questions and gage their responses.

If you need further advice I'd ring up some companies or write to a company asking if they had an IT manager who had some spare time to answer a couple of questions.

It sounds like an IT entry level course though so it might be worth while enquiring at your local college about doing something on a night course, which will probably cost a fraction of the cost, and they will help you find work once you have left.

I don't know the company that you are talking about but I would be a little warey.

If you do decide that you are going to give them a go I wish you luck and sincearly hope that my advice is not worth your time reading :)

dave answers:

You'll find more chances of working in the major cities than the small ones.

Alberta has a big work opportunity boom, but you can NOT find affordable housing.

New Brunswick has tiny boring cities.

Vancouver is the nicest city in all Canada, but very expensive.

Ottawa is nice and quiet, pays well and you can live on the Quebec side for cheaper.

Montreal has many opportunities right now and a surplus of housing for rent.

Here are some web sites for you.

James asks…

What is a good ratio for an IT technician to how many pc's they are in charge of?

I am a technical analyst currently working for a company with 150 computers. I am in charge of all maintenance, repairs, upgrades etc. But I am also in charge of the dept i.e. budget, purchasing, administrating, researching, etc. I'm also in charge of the phone system, cell phones, security systems etc. I am making a business case, stating that we need to hire a 2nd IT person. In your opinion, what is a good ratio for one IT person and the number of pc's. example one IT technician can be in charge of 60 computers etc. thanks!

dave answers:

Sounds like you got your hands very full, thats quite a lot of boxes, I would say it all depends on things like, what OS they're running? User experience also plays a big part, do the users click on ad banners for free screen savers in a heartbeat? Or are they power users that run defrag religiously? What AV system is in place? How restrictive is the firewall?

Also, what about the days when you aren't there? The issues just add up on top of one another when you aren't around? Leaving you a to-do list as long as your arm when you get back...

Judging by my experience as an IT support engineer, most users are incredibly adept at screwing their PC's up, I would defiantly recommend an assistant of some sort, by all means... If all goes well, and you win you're case, mail me cypexx@gmail.com, I'm in the job market, I'm currently in my 4th year working as senior field engineer for a large ISP, I have experience in all of the above fields.

Betty asks…

What is a fair asking price for creating a basic web site for local businesses?

I know this may sound dumb, but I've never really sold my work before.

These web sites I would be making would be for local businesses in my town, and other area towns...well...I guess whoever wants to order my services, but I'd like to begin with companies I know.

Now, the last job I had was for Portland Public Schools. I was already working for them as a Computer Repair Technician for $9/hour, so that's I got paid to create their web site.

I have NO idea what is normal asking price for basic web site design. I used to think like $100-$200, but then again, the company our school district hired before me, they paid them over $2,000 for the same thing I could have created. I found this on a blog: "If you're thinking you might not be able to afford putting up a website, think again. For a simple website, a budget of $2,000 to $5,000 for construction and $100 to $400 for monthly maintenance and updates should cover it. Robust sites with streaming video, opt-in subscriber functions and other, more complicated features can run between $12,000 and $20,000 for construction and $500 to $2,000 for monthly maintenance and updates."

I also know it depends on the quality of work. I can best explain it as a simple yet visually appealing and informative site. Not like the little business sites with just text, and barely any images, but an actual layout and what not. I would be doing the web design work in Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Front Page. Both well known and user friendly products.

So since I used to think $100-$200...and a Design Company charged over $2,000 for the same style of work. What would be a reasonable price to offer to the local business?

dave answers:

$300 and up is a good price. Do not overcharge them.

Susan asks…

Suggest Computer Motherboard Repair person in Noida?

I was searching on this ADs site clickindia.com http://www.clickindia.com/search.php?q=component+level+repair and found 4 people are offering repair services for computer. Have you tried anyone from the 4? Are you aware of any good computer repair person in Noida? All suggestions are welcome. I am very skeptic about going to Nehru Place so pls don't suggest that (or suggest it if u very sure about it)
I already know i can buy a new mobo.

dave answers:

You can not get Motherboard repaired in Noida, most of the service shops will take board from you and will sent to Nehru Place....so best place is nehru place or find a computer shop near you they will charge you 100 Rs addition to the repair cost.

Mark asks…

is it illegal to offer a computer repair service......?

for people who may have illegal material on their computers.

(I'm thinking of the new british CJIA act which now criminalizes people who have violent pornographic images on their computer... even if they are the people in the images, and everything depicted was purely consentual)
old know all... you're wrong... the new law makes consensual BDSM images created by couples for their own use, illegal... this is a change in the law

The unfortunate thing is that I do a lot of PC repairs but I do try and ignore what people put on their machines and as the act has yet to be fully tested in court about how violent or how pornographic it is still a very grey area.
It has to really be down to you to decide what is "acceptable" and what isn't. What I do tell customers is that if they wish to keep that kind of stuff they should put it on disk or external hard drive, tell them that is advantageous for them to do so as it keeps there main OS from becoming to full and fragmented. If they keep this stuff separate then there is no need for you to even know that they have the stuff.
I have only ever shopped one person and that was for having child porn, and I have no regrets about that at all.

I know this doesn't really answer your question but it is the way I have to look at it or I would be losing far too much trade.

Your Questions About Business Computer Repair

James asks…

How can I gain more income from my computer repair business?

I would like to hear from other computer repair technicians. I have just started my own small business, mobile computer repairs for small businesses and home users, in rural Ireland, I am getting a lot of virus removal, spy-ware removal, formatting of operating systems type of work, I also intend on offering basic website design service I am also doing data recovery on usb sticks cameras and computers. I would like advice on increasing my income in areas which have proved to increase income for other such small businesses. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Who knows about starting a computer repair or consultant business?

Lately i been considering starting up my own computer repair business or computer consultany business, Im working toward an associate degree even as i speak. Im good with computers but I.m not sure what kind of license or certification i need in order to start up one, can anyone give me some suggestions or helpful tips.

dave answers:

First off you need to complete your degree and then focus solely on setting up your business. I cannot comment on the consultancy side of things but on the computer repair business I'd advise you to enrol on a small business course to learn about all the ins and outs of running a small business. Next, or at the same time, you need to start advertising both locally and on the Internet – depending on the type of repair business you intend to set up of course as you could do online repairs or offer advisory support over the net (a bit like the techs at PC World, etc do – you may want to look at this site: http://www.computer-repaircenter.com). If your good at something and really enjoy doing it then this is the best line of business you can get into as your enjoyment and enthusiasm for the work will shine through and be appreciated by your clients.

Good luck!

Just have everyone sign something similar in nature to the software license agreements, we all agree to which basically
says " we are not responsible for damages other than, and limited to the cost of the software"

Betty asks…

What does the computer repair business look like over the next 10 years?

Just a quick question. What is your perspective on the computer repair business over the next 10 years?

dave answers:

I've been in the computer repair business for the past 7 years. Initially, I used to sell computer parts and when that stopped being profitable, I moved to the repair line.

I repair:
1. LCD monitors - http://lcdmonitorrepair.annics.com
2. Plasma TVs - http://plasmatvrepair.annics.com
3. Laptops - http://laptoprepair.annics.com

I see consistent growth and demand in these specific areas.

I also repair gaming consoles (XBox, PS3) whenever their warranty has expired and my clients want them fixed cheap.

Over the next 10 years, I expect workstation & server maintenance to be the biggest areas of the computer repair business.

What is the best way to drive a computer repair business?

Mainly locally, A small computer repair business, with many other services, wireless installations, hardware repair, system repair, spyware/virus removal, and so on. I'm trying to boost up the business, and one recommendation was to make an ad and just start putting it in people mail box's. or apartment buildings. the good thing about the business is that the services are very cheap, so its hard to pass it on! any recommendations on how to get more business?

dave answers:

1. Go visit all the stores that sell computers in your area. See if you can do their warranty work, or their repair work. See if they will give out your brochures to people who buy their equipment.
2. Go to the local schools and large businesses and see who they use for computer repair. Offer them a good deal.

What is needed to apply for Computer Repair business license?

I fix computers part time. However, I recently read that if I advertise without a license, I can get into trouble. So my question is: 1. What are the prerequisites to apply for a business license for a computer repair license? 2. Do I have to pay taxes? What form do I use? I live in Houston, tx . Thanks you guys.

dave answers:

Looks like you need a Private Investigator's license for the state of Texas. You'll also have to pay State and Federal income taxes. You might use the 1040-EZ form.
