The Legend of Computer Zorro

Zorro (Spanish for Fox) is the secret identity of Dave Woolsey, a gringo and master computer swordsman living in the Baja Norte, Southern California region. He defends the people of the land against spyware, malware, trojans and other villains, and is not only much too cunning and fox-like for the bumbling bad guys & hackers, but delights in publicly humiliating those same foes by righting their wrongs, while riding on his trusty horse Exterra.

Your Questions About Conficker Patches From Microsoft

Steven asks…

Have you read this article about a Windows Virus, and has it possibly affected your computer?

From Yahoo Tech News :

SAN JOSE, Calif. -
Microsoft Corp. has taken the rare step of warning about a serious computer security vulnerability it hasn't fixed yet.
The vulnerability disclosed Monday affects Internet Explorer users whose computers run the Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 operating software.
It can allow hackers to remotely take control of victims' machines. The victims don't need to do anything to get infected except visit a Web site that's been hacked.
Security experts say criminals have been attacking the vulnerability for nearly a week. Thousands of sites have been hacked to serve up malicious software that exploits the vulnerability. People are drawn to these sites by clicking a link in spam e-mail.
The so-called "zero day" vulnerability disclosed by Microsoft affects a part of its software used to play video. The problem arises from the way the software interacts with Internet Explorer, which opens a hole for hackers to tunnel into.
Microsoft urged vulnerable users to disable the problematic part of its software, which can be done from Microsoft's Web site, while the company works on a "patch" — or software fix — for the problem.
Microsoft rarely departs from its practice of issuing security updates the second Tuesday of each month. When the Redmond, Wash.-based company does issue security reminders at other times, it's because the vulnerabilities are very serious.
A recent example was the emergency patch Microsoft issued in October for a vulnerability that criminals exploited to infect millions of PCs with the Conficker worm. While initially feared as an all-powerful doomsday device, that network of infected machines was eventually used for mundane moneymaking schemes like sending spam and pushing fake antivirus software.

dave answers:

The 2003 model year was not a good year for Mercedes when it came to reliability and dependability. The electronics on the S-Class were the worst of the entire model lineup.

This has had a number of items replaced early in its service life that never should have been a problem, including the AC compressor, alternator, body computer, and ball joints. If the replacement parts were upgraded from the OEM to solve whatever issues made them fail so early you *might* be OK. The half dozen trips in for service in its first 2 years on the road don't bode well either. The normal service interval is roughly every 13,000 miles.

I'd be passing on this one myself. If you had to pay for that body computer yourself, that would be close to 1/3 of the asking price of the car right now. That's an item that cannot be replaced with a junk-yard replacement either as all of the computers are tied to the VIN at the factory.

Your Questions About Computer Repair Maintenance Agreement

Mary asks…

Noisy fan, Averatec 6240?

This notebook computer is loud like a lawnmower. The fan has already been replaced twice (at no cost to me, under the store's maintenance agreement) and now it's doing it for the third time! Only two months after the last repair, and it's doing it again. I'm thinking ahead, after the maintenance agreement runs out and this one part has been replaced several more times, I'll have to learn how to fix it myself. Are all notebook computer fans interchangable, or do they depend on the model? Can I get a more reliable but equivalent brand for this part? Does anyone have step-by-step instructions for taking a notebook computer apart and putting it back together again?

Thank you very sincerely for your time!

dave answers:

Hi you dont mention the make or model of your laptop and as all makes are different with internal components built into the machine differently its difficult to advise you BUT as you say that you wish to learn how to repair the notebook yourself tells me that you are not conversant with the stripping and re assembling the notebook and in this case i would seriously advise you not to try it by yourself, i repair laptops / Notebooks etc and the fan is probably part of the heat exchanger and could be difficult for you to remove plus you would possibly require special tools to upen the case, my advice would be to contact customer support via the manufactures website tell them of your concerns over the fan failure and ask them if there is an upgrade to the standard fan as they may be aware of this problem and be able to assist you to solve the problem.

Your Questions About Conficker Patch Download

Mary asks…

Holy! the conficker virus is coming, help!?

Okay, so my computer has no antivirus, or antispyware or anything like that to find or delete viruses. I downloaded microsoft's service pack 3.
What should i download to protect my computer?
Microsoft updates or patches?(specific links to the download)
If you know any websites that you ABSOLUTELY know is safe and wont mess up the computer, that would be helpful. These can be websites for downloading free antivirus or scanner but it would be awesome if the sites were from the makers, like avg.com and not download.com(i dont trust it, lol). Thank you very much.
should i download avg right now? is it 100% guarenteed to be safe? and actually work? because i downloaded the free version and it kept searching the same place again and again for the scanner.

George asks…

Recent computer virus?

I read on Yahoo news today that there is a rampant virus known as Conficker, Kido or Downadup circulating. A few days ago advice was given to ensure Microsoft's MS08-067 known as KB958644 patch was installed.

Apparently Microsoft have done a good job in protecting home PCs but how can I check to ensure this patch has been downloaded on my PC?
Thank you Mark. And so the MOD are staffed by a load of fools are they?

dave answers:

Just go to the Microsoft update website and scan for updates. That way if you haven't gotten the update you will and if there are any other updates, then you'll get those as well! Plus you won't have to do any searching on your computer and the guess work will be left behind. Good luck.

Your Questions About Computer Repair Services Skype

Robert asks…

Computer glitches and says "Not enough memory available to process this command"?

So, I recently had my dad hook up a server computer (I think that's what they're called) to mine so I could save large files without losing too much memory on my computer. That was a month or two ago. Just this week I've been experiencing problems with my computer. This is what happened:

I had about 3 programs open. Skype, Photoshop CS3 and Firefox. I was browsing the web on NORMAL sites; I haven't downloaded any suspicious programs, I have checked my computer for viruses about 4 times with 5 different, legitimate programs I got from a computer repair guy (what I'm saying is, I'm pretty sure it's not a virus).

Anyway, what happened was, everything had started to lag and got all deformed (the X buttons were missing from the tops of windows, things were getting stuck, etc.), which is weird because that doesn't happen often. Or, at all, actually.

My computer has been bugging me about Low Virtual Memory for a while, but I De-fragmented my C: drive or whatever until it wouldn't let me. I have 23 GB of free space on a hard drive that holds 60 GB. I think that's a fair amount, right? Eh, I don't know.

It isn't that bad... I just can't have more than 1 program open or there is a high chance that the errors will pop up again. I am so used to multitasking, it's killing me not being able to work on multiple things!

I don't know what to do! I haven't experienced this problem before. It might be because of the Network I have been sharing my files on; I read somewhere (before my computer totally lagged and I shut it off) that I should go and increase some number on the server computer to 20? Something like that. I think it was messing with the registry.

Anyway, any advice would be awesome.

I'm on a Windows XP Media Center Version 2002 Service Pack 3 if that helps.

Thanks!

This will help you out.

George asks…

Do you use your computer for any and pretty much everything?

And what's a computer without a decent internet connection? To me, they go hand in hand. I don't remember the last time i went on a computer and did not use the internet. These days, I browse for everything online... from recipes to job postings. I recently started using skype too (thanks to Oprah) and since i don't have a home phone, i now make a lot of my calls using that. Sure the quality is SOMETIMES bad, but skype is so ridiculously cheap compared to any other phone service, that it's beyond worth it to me. I also use my laptop and computer to save on cable b/c i can find literally any show or movie online.
So is there anyone else out there that uses their laptop a lot? And what are some things you use it for? It would be good to get extra ideas lol..
I'm so dependent on this computer now that everytime it's in for repairs, it's such a nightmare. Thankfully, that's not too often.
