Your Questions About Computer Repair Services

Laura asks…

How much should I charge for computer repair services?

I'm pondering the idea to start this computer company. But I don't know the prices that computer guys charge for general services. So I need your help please. Tell me prices and charges that I can charge my customers, thanks very very much guys!

dave answers:

It depends on the kind of repair services you intend to provide.

For example, I run an LCD repair shop and charge a flat fee of $70 to repair a 15" monitor. This includes parts & labor, but excludes the panel.

For a 17-18" monitor, you can charge around $100-125

For repairing a notebook or 14" laptop screen a flat fee of $115 should be fair to both parties.

Maria asks…

if paedophiles risk being discovered by computer repair services, mustnt they have to buy a?

fortunes worth of new stuff, every time they suffer a computer glitch?

dave answers:

Or they are just good at IT and fixing their own stuff...

Jenny asks…

What would you charge for the flowing computer repair services?...?

perform the following tasks to SEVEN computers:

format HDD
install windows
install microsoft office
install antivirus

would you charge hourly or flat rate? what would the total be?

dave answers:

Hourly rate. No less than $20 to $30 an hr.

Donald asks…

you might be from Southern California if? and what is the best thing about San Diego?

Southern California, or So Cal, is defined as the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Its population centers on the counties of Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, San Bernardino, Riverside and Ventura. The region is home to over 23 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, behind only the BosWash Region in the Northeastern United States.

There is no official definition for the northern boundary of Southern California. However, most definitions in use include all the land south of the Tehachapi Mountains, located about 70 miles (113 km) north of Los Angeles.

On the west of Southern California lies the Pacific Ocean; to the south is the international border between the United States and Mexico; to the east are the Mojave and Colorado Deserts and the Colorado River at the state's border with Arizona and Nevada. Southern California is also divided into the Coastal Region (Orange County, Los Angeles County, San Diego County, Santa Barbara County, and Ventura County) and the larger, more sparsely populated, desert Inland Empire (San Bernardino County, Riverside County, and Imperial County). The division between the Coastal Regions and the Inland Empire winds along the backs of the coastal mountain ranges such as the Santa Ana Mountains. A related geographical term is cismontane Southern California, which refers to the portion of California on the coastal side of the Transverse and Peninsular mountain ranges. The term "Southern California" often refers to this region specifically, as opposed to largely desert areas comprising the rest of the southern portion of the state, which are referred to as transmontane Southern California.

San Diego (pronounced /?sændi?e?go?/) is a coastal Southern California city located in the southwestern corner of the continental United States. In 2007, the city's population was estimated to be 1,266,731.[1] It is the second largest city in California and the eighth largest city in the United States, by population. It is the county seat of San Diego County.[2] and is the economic center of the San Diego–Carlsbad–San Marcos metropolitan area, the 17th-largest in the United States with a population of 3,146,274 as of 2008, and the 21st-largest metropolitan area in the Americas when including Tijuana (See San Diego-Tijuana Metro.).

San Diego County lies just north of the Mexican border—sharing a border with Tijuana—and lies south of Orange County. It is home to miles of beaches, a mild Mediterranean climate and 16 military facilities hosting the United States Navy, the United States Coast Guard and the United States Marine Corps.

The presence of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) with the affiliated UCSD Medical Center promotes research in biotechnology.[citation needed] San Diego's economy is largely composed of agriculture, biotechnology/biosciences, computer sciences, electronics manufacturing, defense-related manufacturing, financial and business services, ship-repair and construction, software development, telecommunications, and tourism. The city of San Diego itself has deep canyons separating its mesas, creating small pockets of natural parkland scattered throughout the city. The same canyons give parts of the city a highly segmented feel, creating literal gaps between otherwise proximal neighborhoods and contributing to a low-density, car-centered built environment. Downtown San Diego is located on San Diego Bay. Balboa Park lies on a mesa to the northeast. It is surrounded by several dense urban communities and abruptly ends in Hillcrest to the north. The Coronado and Point Loma peninsulas separate San Diego Bay from the ocean. Ocean Beach is on the west side of Point Loma. Mission Beach and Pacific Beach lie between the ocean and Mission Bay, a man-made aquatic park. La Jolla, an affluent community, lies north of Pacific Beach. Mount Soledad in La Jolla offers views from northern San Diego County to Mexico. Mountains rise to the east of the city, and beyond the mountains are desert areas. Cleveland National Forest is a half-hour drive from downtown San Diego. Numerous farms are found in the valleys northeast and southeast of the city. San Diego County has one of the highest counts of animal and plant species that appear on the endangered species list among counties in the United States.[3]

Help finding work with computers in San diego?

(before you ask about what degrees i have i am only 19 and still in school.) I moved to San Diego from Riverside CA. and sens then i have been stuck in retail and i would really like something better. before moving i was a computer technician for 3 months, it was my first job, it was pretty cool, but my boss lost his father to a stroke and he sold the business. sense it was abrupt and i didn't have a chance to find a replacement, so i took a retail job. It was fine for 2months but i was working more then i was going to school and i was earning pennies for what i was doing. I'm not a professional but i'm not unskilled. In my first job i was repairing, upgrading , and building computers. Both Servers and HTPC. Setting up networks Wired and wireless. So i'm trying to find something similar in San Diego. Or at least a job agency to help me find that kind of job or something similar. Help would be much appreciated. If you need any more details just send me an IM.

dave answers:

Try a temp agency. And go out and knock on doors so to speak. Go to computer places and apply don't waste time on want ads and the internet as everybody does.

Divorcee Job Hunt Need Help?

Hi there,
I am a talented divorcee and I need a job. I can't afford to work for minimum wage and mathematical shortcomings are all that is keeping me from my degree (I have flunked remedial math 4 times and can't take my science courses to obtain my degree without a passing math grade) I have 167 college credits with a 3.45 gpa if you subtract the math courses from my overall GPA.

I have owned my own jewelry store, been an assistant manager of a pawn shop, been a private investigator, and am the only NAIS certified adoption search specialist in the entire country. I have worked as a Karaoke DJ in bars and private parties but my karaoke gear is not working presently and I can't afford the repairs being unemployed.

I have also written computer game reviews for Amiga world and Computer Gaming World magazines.

I served as the president of the Abington Downs homeowners association in Madison, Alabama and was on the Architechural control Comittee.

I have no resume because most of my experience is self employment.

I really need to find a high paying job or entry level at about $35-40K in order to make my bills.

Below is an example of what i have come up with for a resume, I think it stinks, I need help. Please offer suggestions.
I can't move I live in San Diego.

Objective: To land an entry level job at Yahoo! Near or from my home in San Diego, Ca.
Summary: This is not your standard resume, and I am not your standard future employee.
I would make an excellent choice in a position at Yahoo! because after years of real life experience I know it is all about the bottom line and results, and experience has taught me how to achieve this goal. My college GPA stands at about 3.45 however in addition to having a good education, at the age of 43 I have a lot of real life experience that other younger entry level candidates can’t match. Education is important, but many things can’t be taught in a book. Furthermore, as my former mother-in-law once said of me I am, “Honest to a fault”. Honesty and dependability are very important to me. I know a company like Yahoo! values these traits too. I have had a thriving web based business in the late ‘90’s focusing on the Tiger Electronics interactive toy “Furby” which promoted this toy and generated thousands of dollars in revenue on click through commissions alone. I am high energy and enjoy the spotlight. I have worked as a professional disc jockey and karaoke entertainer for 12 years, I was also a licensed private investigator and taught beading classes and jewelry craft in my own boutique in Madison, Alabama. I have been to fourteen countries both for business and pleasure. I have also been a relief worker in the Honduras. All this while raising a family of four children. These things make me a great choice for any entry level position.
Most of my experience stems from self employment or volunteer work. Again, unlike your average candidate, I can’t list dates employed here or there, because being a Mom and a wife came first when I was married. I have not punched a clock since I left the US Navy in 1987. I have been working on my BA sporadically, as money permits, and also working on repairing my credit post divorce induced bankruptcy. Please do not judge me on my credit report; it is not a fair representation of my credit-worthiness. Much of the red is still pending litigation with my former spouse and as much as I wish I could pay all the joint debt we held, I can’t.
I would like the opportunity to sit down and discuss a position at Yahoo! in an interview. I am sure that once Yahoo! sees that I am a fast learner, outgoing and LOVE people, Yahoo! will know I am the right choice for a position.
I am hoping to earn at least 35 – 40K in my first year, but do not want to place a 40K limit upon myself… I require at least 20K and would need health benefits and retirement.
I hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,
Leah XX

dave answers:

Just because you were self-employed doesn't mean you can't get your job history onto a resume. You will just need to come up with some business and personal references (3 each should do the trick for a total of 6) that can attest to you being dependable, having a strong work ethic, that kind of thing. But you simply list from this date to that date, the company name and list your responsibilities to the best of your ability.

You can include your military experience. Do not provide your salary requirements in your resume. You can research the average salaries on the internet and get an idea what jobs offer what ranges and focus your energies where the best paying jobs are. Leave the actual money and benefit discussion for the interview. Most job listings will tell you salary range, benefits or both.

Your best bet for looking for work is to narrow down your skill sets. From what you've listed, it looks like you have good organizational skills, you have excellent writing skills, can multi-task, you enjoy public speaking and presenting, and you have retail experience. Here are some key questions: do you know any current applications for computers (such as MicroSoft office)? Do you have good keyboarding skills (can you type quickly and accurately)? Those will certainly give you more options if you have computer and keyboarding skills.

I am 42 years old, divorced, have no college and I make more than your salary requirements state. Unless you are looking to get into a big corporation or need specific skills (i.e. Lawyer or doctor), college degrees - or lack thereof - don't necessarily dictate your ability to obtain gainful employment.

Your best bet would be to get your resume in order then search on sites like Monster.com and Careerbuilders.com. Take a look in the retail industry at the manager level if you can't type and don't know current computer applications. In my state (NJ), starting salaries for retail managers in the malls are in the $40's and chances are, boutiques will pay even better. If you can type and know computers, you can look into Customer Service management, Executive Assistants or Sales (either inside or outside). You will more than likely have to partially pay for your healthcare benefits, so keep that in mind when discussing your salary. Stock options and/or 401K's are pretty common in most companies.

Email me your email address (ericat@mnbcorp.com) and I'll send you an example of how you should set up your resume and a good cover letter. What you've got above isn't going to get you anywhere. Employers want things in bullet points, short and sweet and your resume cannot exceed one page. And it's ok to sell yourself. Don't be so honest that you miss an opportunity!

Your Questions About Computer Repair Software Diagnostics Tools

Chris asks…

How do I fix Windows boot failure due to memory diagnostics?

One day, I was feeling adventurous and tried the Memory Diagnostics Tool (Control Panel > Administrative Tools). But it turned out that the test took more than 4 hours to complete. I think the message "This will take several minutes" was misleading because I thought it was referring to the whole test, instead the test consists of so many rounds with 2 test runs in each round. Feeling fed up of waiting, I pressed 'Esc' to cancel each round.

Then the screen changes from blue & white to black & white and this message appeared:

"Windows Boot Manager

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might the cause.

Status: 0xc0000017

Info: An unexpected error has occurred"

The message recommended that I insert my Windows installation disc, reboot and use 'Repair your computer' option. So I did, but the Startup Repair reported that no problem was detected and indicated the OS will have have a successful boot. But Windows still failed to boot with the same message appearing after I canceled the memory diagnostics.

Now what?
Nothing to do with messing up memory. I was just trying to check if the RAMs have any errors & see how the diagnostic works.

dave answers:

I suspect the memory diagnostics may have corrupted your BIOS settings. See if you can get into the BIOS and reset to "safe" settings. Then go and detect your hard drive and try re-boot...
If there is any memory timing in the BIOS that is incorrect, it may not boot properly.

Thomas asks…

Am trying to figure out this "unmountable boot volume" thing on my PC.?

I've read and printed off several other responses but I cannot get PC to work. what of the following SPECIFIC Dell disks do i need to insert into the disc drive in order to get to the C: prompt (in order for me to type in "chkdsk /p" or whatever prompt I'll need) OR for the PC to pick up on the inserted disc in order for me to pic "cleanup" or "repair"--->> here are all the disks I have: 1) drivers/utilities (diagnostics and utilities)/online documentation/phone tools/modem on hold 2) Application (ro resinstalling roxio easy cd creator) 3) drivers/utilities (device drivers/diagnostics and utilities/computer documentation 4) application (antivirus, support, multimedia and internet software) 5) operating system (reinstallation CD/microsoft windows XP home edition/service pack 1)
-When trying to read disc #1 from above, on the screen popped up: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)windowssystem32c......... over and over again with different endings.
-recently replaced HD
update after using luck disc #5: it said something like "okay, now you can press 'r' at the blank screen and start the repair" well, lucky me, i tried this and got THIS error message: "a disk read error occurred; press ctrl+alt+del to restart" when I do this, the screen turns blank for a second or two and then - in a brief flash - reads "NT detect failed" -- i look over at the PC now and it's just cycling in between the dell boot up logo, a blank screen for a few seconds, the "NT detect failed" message, then the dell logo/start-up thing..... it won't stop cycling.

Last question: do computers simply hate my guts?

dave answers:

Your Computer Seems To Be Starting Up In "SafeMode"Why?Who Knows. But I Can Tell You How To Get To The C Prompt.Put In Your Reinstallation Disc.Restart Your Computer.Wait For the Prompt PRESS ANY KEY TO BOOT FROM CDOr SETUP IS INSPECTING YOUR HARDWARE.After The Drivers Load Choose The Option "To REPAIR USING THE RECOVERY CONSOLE"What system Do You Want To Log On To?Press (1),And ForThe Password Just Press Enter(Unless You Have A Custom Password). You Should Be At The C Prompt Now.The Good News Is That You Have The Reinstallation CD.Worst Case Senerio is Using It To Reinstall. Most People Dont Even Have It.

Vaio laptop problem! help please?

I need you help guys! :( (

So here's the problem, after trying the following:

" On start up tap F8 until you get to the boot screen
Run the "Repair my computer" option

>The username and password doesn't show up! It goes back

to the usual black bg saying,

""Windows Error Recovery

change might be the cause.

If windows files have been damaged or configured

incorrectly, Startup Repair can help diagnose and fix the

problem. If power was interrupted during startup, choose .

Launch Startup Repair(recommended)
Start windows normally""

>If I'll choose "Launch Startup Repair(recommended)"
Windows file loads then Recovery tools will be launched.

Vaio Recovery Center shows up and asks me to choose

among FOUR OPTIONS: Windows System Restore, Vaio

Hardware Diagnostics, Restore C: Drive and Rescue Data.

NONE of it really helps. Like when I chose the Windows

System Restore, it says "No restore points have been

created on your comp's system disk. To create a restore

point open System Protection." Same thing with the other 3

options. Its like they're not clickable! And as soon as I exit

the program(?), "OS not detected on the C: drive. Restore

the C: drive or restore the complete system" shows up. It

doesn't make sense! since when I tried the Restore C: Drive

option, it will only end up having "NO SYSTEM PARTITON".

>If I'll choose " Start windows normally"
The Pc will just restart then back to the usual black bg,

dave answers:

I'm not sure what happened the day before this problem, nor do i know exactly the issue, but when you start up the computer try to get it into safe mode, when its starting up. In that stage if possible to get there, you will be able to do a few things. One is to insert the CD when you can get to the desktop and then repairing the computer. Or go into system restore and go to a date when your computer worked normally. Also check for any newly installed software and uninstall it perhaps something is messing the computer up.

Hope this helps.
